Join the Cleveland Storyteller and Support iPads for Autism

The Rotary Club of Willoughby during the last five years has funded the purchase of 300 refurbished iPads that are donated to area organizations supporting families with children who have autism. All proceeds of the annual Rotary Autism Fundraiser on March 19, 2017 at Pine Ridge Country Club go toward the effort, culminating a yearlong fundraising project that raises up to $18,000.

The Cleveland Storyteller, Dan Ruminski, is proud to share stories and entertain the audience. Willoughby Mayor Dave Anderson will help facilitate a lively Q&A-style conversation about Cleveland’s fascinating past. The evening includes cocktails, dinner and the opportunity to make a difference in a family’s life.

We know that the iPad can help individuals with autism improve basic social, fine motor, language and communication skills. It gives many autistic individuals a tool to express themselves-to learn, to speak with their loved ones, teachers and peers. By using the iPad, some children with autism may significantly reduce the frustration they experience with these activities. Our effort at Willoughby Rotary Club was prompted by a 60 Minutes report that shared the success of using iPads in the autism community. We were inspired and wanted to help families here gain access to the technology.

The Willoughby Rotary Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that has contributed more than $250,000 to Rotary International humanitarian programs and more than 30 Ohio charitable causes since 1998. The Rotary Autism Fundraiser is one of our successful projects.

The March 19 event is inspiring-it’s a celebration of giving a vital tool to families who need it. This year, our organization will give away 50 to 60 iPads. Last year’s recipients included Broadmoor School in Mentor, West End Elementary in Meadville, Pa., Autism Speaks Cleveland, Lake County YMCA, the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities and CARES in Mentor.
